General information

SPANISH TRAVELLING VIRTUOSI Vol. 1
A project by La Guirlande for the recovery and promotion of 18th century Spanish music

Spanish Travelling Virtuosi Vol. 1 will be the first volume of a series of recordings that La Guirlande has set out to do with this theme.

Spanish Travelling Virtuosi aims to recover, record and promote works of the Spanish repertoire of the eighteenth century composed by musicians who were characterized as brilliant virtuosos of their respective instruments. On the other hand, another common feature that those composers have is that they were all tireless travelers who toured the main European musical centers of the time, reaping great successes of critics and audiences wherever they played.

Spanish Travelling Virtuosi will also be our first recording, which we certainly wanted to dedicate to our 18th century musical heritage, so often forgotten by the musicology of the 20th and 21st centuries.

Main features and goals of the crowdfunding campaign

The main interest of our project is the recovery of the Spanish repertoire of the 18th century, in this case centered on virtuous Spanish musicians of their respective instruments, which reaped success and fame in the main European musical centers.

Of the 7 works that will be recorded on this album, 5 of them will be World Première Recording. This album will include works by composers such as the brothers Joan and Josep Pla, Joaquín Nicolás Ximénez Brufal, Felipe Lluch, Giacomo Facco and Joan Cabanilles.

For this, we will have recognized performers in the field of early music, as well as the excellent sound engineer Pablo Barreiro, who assiduously records the Symphony Orchestra of Galicia, as well as numerous recordings of early music with different spanish groups.

Why this is important

It was two years ago when we began to think about this ambitious project, moved by our interest in recovering all that eighteenth-century Spanish music forgotten for a long time. From the beginning, we had the idea that this project had to finally lead us to the recording of what will be our first album.

For the elaboration of this project we have already invested a lot of time, effort, dedication, and also some money. Therefore, we hope you can help us to pay for these expenses through your contributions. In return, we have prepared a series of rewards. There are them for all tastes, you just have to choose the one you like the most!

So, we encourage you to join us on this trip around Europe with the Spanish Travelling Virtuosi. You will decide how far you want to go.

We look forward to your support!

We will use the money to:

  • Take part of the costs of recording, editing and mastering the CD.
  • Publication of a first print run of 1000 copies.
  • Cover travel expenses and maintenance of the 5 musicians and the sound technician during the days of the recording
  • Payments and shipments of the rewards, the percentages of this platform and the bank commission

Team and experience

Founded by Luis Martínez Pueyo during his stay in the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, La Guirlande is one of the most versatile ensembles specialising in historically informed performance of 18th and 19th century music.

Winners of the V Gijón International Early Music Competition, La Guirlande‘s repertoire is centered in 18th and 19th century music in which the flute plays a fundamental role: from the flute sonata – with obbligato harpsichord or pianoforte, as well as basso continuo – to the solo concert, including all kinds of combinations of chamber music. Furthermore, the use of either original period instruments or their replicas, as well as a thorough historical research on performance practice from a variety of treatises and sources, mark La Guirlande’s main purpose: to achieve a performance of the repertoire as near to the original idea of each composer as possible.

La Guirlande is formed by renowned musicians, both nationally and internationally, in the field of historically informed performance. They have studied in some of the most important European schools for early music (Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, Conservatoire National Supérieur de Paris, Koninklijk Conservatorium den Haag), and some of them play in renowned ensembles and orchestras, such as Les Arts Florissants, Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, Orchestra of the 18th Century, Le Concert des Nations, Freiburg Baroque Orchestra, La Capella Mediterranea, La Cetra Barockorchester Basel, Concerto Köln, Accademia Bizantina, Montis Regalis Orchestra, Bach Collektiv, Elbipolis Barockorchester Hamburg, Bach Akademie Luzern, Musica Fiorita, European Union Baroque Orchestra, Al Ayre Español, Los Músicos de su Alteza, La Tempestad, Insula Orchestra, and Orchestre Français des Jeunes, among others..

The ensemble La Guirlande takes its name from one of the god Apollo’s most important symbols, sign of glory and recognition in arts, wisdom and the games.
