JULIA aims to tell the story of the post-war generation in the Galician countryside. This documentary
is not just about the personal story of the main character, but it is also about the calm and peace of
a very characteristic lifestyle, a lifestyle in danger of extinction. Most of the customs and traditions
may be lost within the next years.
JULIA represents a local world in a global one. She represents the universalization of the
grandmother character living in the countryside. There are JULIas all over the world, JULIAs that
represent the values that will have disappeared in few years` time .
My grandmother has always been self-sufficient. In her vegetable garden you can find peppers,
lettuces, onions, potatoes and basically anything you can imagine. In the past we used to have cows
and many other animals, but nowadays there are just a few left: one pig, some chickens and some
rabbits. In the past, the whole family would help to look after these food sources but nowadays this
help is no longer needed due to the reduction of the amount of work. In spite of this all the family,
even the new members, like to gather around Julia in particular moments such as the slaughter of
the pig, the picking of potatoes and so on.
All this leads me to think that this lifestyle will be gone in less time that I would like. And this is why
I have decided to preserve as much as I can in the form of video. So the generations to come will be
able to learn what this very special generation was like.
Main features and goals of the crowdfunding campaign
No one is helping me to make this documentary. I am assuming all the costs on my own. I am
working for free and I am paying other people to work for me in the areas I don't know about, like
The money will be used for:
- Giving you your rewards
- Edition, Sound, Postproduction, distribution and advertising,
- Registration fees in festivals and others
Why this is important
- This project is for the people who think that there are still lots of untold stories in the Spanish and
- This project is addressed to women who want to make matriarchy societies more visible all over
the world. Without this Galician matriarchy, we would not be who we are nowadays.
- This project is aimed at all those who feel that the world is moving so fast, that we need to save
and preserve the lifestyles of previous generations, in order to learn from them
- This project is intended for the ones who believe that social documentaries are not dead.
- This project is directed to anyone who lives or has any relative living in the countryside.
I have worked regularly for channels like BBC, Netflix, Fox and National Geographic, I have also
directed advertising and music videos.
I gained most of my professional experience working in Brazil and the UK and that has given me a
different approach to topics like the one on this documentary.
My TV and Film experience is very wide: I have worked in different roles...from Researcher to AP, to
Cameraman and as a DOP very recently. But this is the first time that I am making such a personal
Living abroad has helped me to really appreciate what I have at home .
If I get enough money, I will hire the right people who can help me to finish this. I will need
assistance with the sound design as this is not my area of expertise.
