General information

Aquella Casa (That House) is a fictional short film made from archival material, directed by Nil Vives and produced by Horizontal Films Media. The project originates from the discovery of a family archive on Super8 film, shot during the 1960s and 70s in a modernist house in Viladecans. These images capture the everyday life of a Catalan family in a space and lifestyle that have almost disappeared over time due to urban transformation.

Synopsis: He has dreamt once again of the house where he lived as a child and grew up — the family home that was demolished and replaced by apartment blocks. He walks through the grand house and its gardens unnoticed, like a ghost, watching the comings and goings of his parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles as they recreate mundane gestures and actions that, over time, became rituals. And every morning, just before waking up, he retraces his steps through the house, the gardens, and the orchards, until he exits through the gate and climbs the mountain path — now turned into a street swallowed by the high-rise towers that sprang up overnight. And each time, it becomes harder for him to wake up, to leave behind that lost paradise surrendered to the real estate giants that surrounded it, and which now only exists when he dreams.

Status: The project is currently in the editing and voice-over writing phase. The Sunyer Deu family has donated a large amount of archival material, and so far we have worked with low-quality digital copies. We are now at a stage where it is essential to digitize the selected films in higher resolution.

What will we use the funds for?
Your contribution will help bring this project to life and make it possible for these images to see the light. We need €2,500 to digitize several Super 8 film reels in high quality.
In addition, part of the budget will go to post-production, including sound design, color correction, and final mix.
Finally, we require €4,500 for distribution, including participation in festivals and organizing screenings. We also need €800 for subtitling, €2,500 for marketing and publicity expenses, and €3,500 for educational and outreach event costs.

Main features and goals of the crowdfunding campaign

In 2024, the project won the El Modern Grant from the Girona City Council, and Nil is currently receiving mentorship from filmmakers and editors Ariadna Ribas and Artur Tort. The project is also supported by the Girona Provincial Council for the creation of new audiences.

This project not only seeks to recover images but to revive emotions and experiences that are part of our collective identity. In this sense, its main strengths are:

  • An original format based on the re-editing of real Super8 footage, which gives the short film its own aesthetic and transports the viewer to another space-time.
  • A universal story born from a local narrative, as the film connects with anyone who has experienced the loss of a meaningful place.
  • The reinterpretation of past images through the sensitivity of a young team offers a new contemporary and intergenerational perspective.
  • Intergenerational collaboration in the recovery and preservation of historical memory.
  • The heritage and cultural value of the project, since Aquella Casa not only tells a story but also contributes to preserving collective memory and the architectural heritage of cities.

Our objectives are:

  • To recover the historical memory of summers, life, childhood, lost spaces, and slow time.
  • To reach young adults who feel an emotional connection to the loss of childhood places and the transformation of the urban landscape.
  • To explore collective memory, local history, family environments, urban sociology, and identity.

Why this is important

The project Aquella Casa is born from the need to preserve the visual memory of a fading past, the historical value of old images, and the ability to transform them into a cinematic narrative that connects with the present.

It seeks to go beyond nostalgia, exploring how the disappearance of a physical place impacts the construction of our collective identity. The local story thus becomes a reflection of a universal phenomenon: the loss of childhood spaces, the evolution of urban life, and the need to preserve memory through audiovisual media.

Moreover, Aquella Casa is being developed during a time of growing interest in archival cinema and the reinterpretation of the past through a contemporary lens. The combination of documentary and fiction not only recovers these images, but also gives them new life, creating a more immersive experience for the viewer.

In terms of feasibility, the fact that the project does not require a major shooting phase allows for an agile and adaptable production, optimizing resources and maximizing its cultural and cinematic impact.

Aquella Casa is an invitation to reflect on how we remember, transform, and give meaning to the spaces we have inhabited. It speaks to a broad audience from an emotional and cinematic perspective:

  • People who have experienced the loss of meaningful spaces, whether a family home, a neighborhood, or a childhood landmark
  • Consumers of archival and experimental cinema, who value the dialogue between past imagery and contemporary storytelling
  • Young filmmakers and film professionals interested in new audiovisual languages and in blending documentary and fiction
  • People interested in historical memory and urban transformation
  • National and international festivals focused on experimental and documentary cinema, as well as local screenings and exhibitions in towns and villages
