The Palestinian diaspora and its struggle for memory and identity form the core of La Raíz del Olivo: Herencia – Capítulo Chile (The Root of the Olive Tree: Heritage – Chile Chapter). This second installment of the documentary series aims to portray—through an intimate, firsthand perspective—how one of the world’s largest Palestinian communities, based in Chile, keeps its cultural, historical, and political ties to Palestine alive.
This project follows the chapter produced in Cuba, where five voices from the diaspora offered a way to explore experiences of uprooting, resistance, and belonging. Today, amidst a global context marked by the ongoing occupation and genocide in Palestine, it is urgent to expand this narrative by highlighting new stories that help us understand the human dimension of the conflict beyond the headlines.
Why Chile, and why now?
Chile is home to the largest Palestinian community outside the Middle East—a place where the diaspora not only resists but also keeps the memory, identity, and struggle of its people alive across generations. Against a backdrop of persistent violence and media silence, this documentary stands as a political act and a form of protest; it seeks to shatter indifference, confront disinformation, and restore humanity to a cause that has been systematically stripped of it. Through the voices of those living outside Palestinian territory, the documentary asserts memory as a form of resistance and solidarity as an urgent ethical and collective imperative.
Our narrative approach
The documentary combines personal testimonies, footage of daily life, and archival material, weaving intimate stories together with the Chilean social, cultural, historical, and political context. This approach creates a narrative that does more than simply document events—it actively engages and challenges the viewer.
"La Raíz del Olivo – Capítulo Chile Herencia" is a project by the production company L.A. CHASKI, backed by the Argentine outlet Resumen Latinoamericano y del Tercer Mundo—an audiovisual production hub with a proven track record in creating documentaries focused on social issues, politics, and historical memory. L.A. CHASKI has developed various works centering on peoples in resistance, human rights, cultural identities, and realities of the Global South, building a body of work grounded in a critical, ethical, and committed perspective.
Notable among the production company’s previous works is the documentary Dónde están los Girasoles (Where Are the Sunflowers), also produced in collaboration with Resumen Latinoamericano y del Tercer Mundo; this project received the National Award for Audiovisual Journalism from the AHS in Cuba.
The first chapter of La Raíz del Olivo, produced in Cuba, also received support from the pan-Arab news network Al Mayadeen. This documentary has been screened at various international festivals and distributed in over 20 countries, establishing the project as an audiovisual work with global reach and significant political and cultural relevance.
The team comprises professionals experienced in filmmaking, research, heritage studies, and documentary production. This expertise allows the project to be approached from a holistic perspective, combining artistic sensitivity, in-depth research, and a commitment to the communities involved. For the development of "Capítulo Chile Herencia", the project relies on ongoing partnerships with organizations, cultural collectives, and Palestinian communities both within and outside Chile; these alliances facilitate the processes of research, funding, filming, and the documentary's subsequent distribution across cinematic, community, educational, and cultural venues.
The motivation for this project stems from the urgent need to keep talking about Palestine, building memory and visibility around this cause through a human, political, and honest lens. Following the production of La Raíz del Olivo in Cuba and its positive international reception, the conviction arose that these stories needed not only to continue but to expand into other territories where the Palestinian diaspora has put down deep roots. Chile thus emerges as a key location—not only for hosting the largest Palestinian community outside Palestinian territory but also for the richness of its experiences, generations, and forms of cultural and organizational resistance. This project answers the desire to stand with these voices, record their memories, and—through documentary filmmaking—contribute to resistance and collective advocacy by constructing a narrative that engages with the realities of the Global South and with struggles for self-determination, sovereignty, and social justice.
The project aims to raise awareness within the international community, give a voice to the Palestinian diaspora, and highlight stories of struggle and resistance unfolding outside Palestinian territory.
It is also designed for students, educators, social collectives, cultural venues, and audiences seeking audiovisual content that is critical, sensitive, and committed to human rights, historical memory, migration, cultural identities, and the struggles of peoples.

"The Olive Tree’s Roots – Heritage: Chile Chapter" is a documentary project committed to preserving historical memory, defending human rights, and highlighting the experiences of the Palestinian diaspora in Latin America. Through the testimonies of various generations of the Palestinian community in Chile, the documentary seeks to foster a critical understanding of the processes of displacement, identity, and resistance, while strengthening intercultural dialogue and international solidarity. The project embraces cinema as an ethical and political tool aimed at generating reflection, raising awareness, and building collective memory regarding a historic genocide that remains ongoing.
