Laneras (DehesaLana & Merineando) is a group of farmers, artists and professionals coming together to bring the wool back to our homes to revitalize social relationships and foster environmentally friendly farming practices.
Our cooperative, ACTYVA, is made up of farmers, breeders, professionals, consumers and users. The management of our merino sheep flocks fully meets sustainable and/or organic farming criteria. A group of cooperative users would like to process the excellent wool they produce using biodegradable products, and make it available as washed merino fleece wool, carded batts, blended tops and a wide range of merino wool yarns to knit and felt. Be it at home or at a professional workshop, the aim is to recover the contact with natural fibers while supporting the farms that are restoring the pastures, dehesas and olive groves in Extremadura (Spain).
Besides providing pure wool at different stages of processing, we are preparing a complete training program, a handbook and tutorial videos that show felting and spinning techniques. These will be made available for social entities to promote the use of natural fibers and recover the ancestral knowledge on garment and accessories production, which will hopefully generate self-employment opportunities.
To make excellent quality wool available to households and professional workshops: the wool will have been produced meeting sustainability and/or organic farming criteria. We'll offer carded batts, combed tops and yarn. Wool processing will be partly the result of artisanal work. Given that big amounts of fabric are needed, we'll need to rely also on a few semi-industrial processes.
To strengthen the joint black sheep flock (breeders and ACTYVA Coop) that grazes around the town of Cáceres, both as an educational and an environmental and heritage conservation tool.
To create awareness of the social and environmental benefits arising from the use of wool amongst representatives of the textile sector (crafts and design) and the general public. This will be achieved through contact-making, transmedia communication and yarn bombing events.
To train the general public, unemployed and persons with disabilities in the field of wool hand processing, spinning, felting and knitting. Most of wool processing and textile production techniques have been proved to bring important biopsychosocial benefits and to improve memory and concentration.
To carry out demonstrations, exhibitions and workshops for children at schools, farm schools and local associations. These will bring children closer to wool processing and give them the opportunity to learn about wool-related traditional crafts.
To create ACTYVA Coop's own textile production, which will allow to meet the needs of the coop members but also non-members when possible. Techniques such as knitting, crochet, weaving, wet and needle felting will be used, in combination with other modern and traditional textile production methods. A variety of high quality garments and accessories will be produced with the utmost respect for the environment. This textile production will follow a line of clothing, footwear, accessories, decorative items, toys, puppets, etc.: DehesaLana.
We believe that, in these times of change, times of frenzied pace, we've become more and more distant to our basic needs while outsourcing their provision. We've lost the means of production and we have set ourselves apart from our own wealth and resources. We have forgotten natural processes and left all these matters at the mercy of large markets. By opening up the field to a resource of the Iberian peninsular southwest (the dehesa territory), we will benefit the society as a whole: new employment opportunities will be created, local popular knowledge will be recovered and preserved and quality produce will be made accessible. Furthermore, we will contribute to the conservation of the dehesa, the olive grove and grazing ecosystems in general, not only as an economic resource, but also as an environmental one: think of carbon sequestration, soil improvement and biodiversity enhancement. One more step towards the dehesa remaining Europe's largest High Nature Value farming system and the peninsular southwest being Europe's biological reserve.
To give new value to local wool as part of the historical, cultural, social and economic heritage.
To promote local textile production and consumption.
To disseminate knowledge of wool amongst society and encourage the public to approach wool production and transformation and textile techniques. To show the opportunities that working with wool offers, while reinforcing social relationships and restoring ecosystems.
GuerrillART has succesfully launched two crowdfunded campaings before in goteo.org: BBBFarming, an online platform for agroecology and food sovereignity, and Living Memory, a documentary about Spanish CNT.
Since 2012 we have been involved in the constitution of ACTYVA, a non for profit multistake holders cooperative with more than 230 members among consumers, growers, farmers, proffesionals and organisations from the Southwest of Spain mainly.
Laneras is a joint venture among Elisa Romero and Almudena Sánchez (DehesaLana), Beatriz Cárcamo (laneando.wordpress.com), Ana Trejo (Tomatetutiempo), Carlos Lino Vital (photo) and Gonzalo Palomo (Merineando). BBBFarming has been a similar collaboration among professionals, artists and farmers.
